Can't add something you totally have permission to join because it's the week after registration?

In many cases you will need to petition the Committee on Programs and Academic Standing, but in some more straightforward cases, you can submit the Online Add Form, which will allow you to upload confirmation emails from the instructor and your adviser.

When can I use the Add Form?

  • Add a course (after the course registration deadline) for which you are waitlisted
  • Add a discussion or recitation section
  • Add a lab or zero-point course
  • Add a PE or Dance course
  • Add a short course that has not yet begun
  • Change Sections of a course (eg. section 02 to section 01)
  • Change levels (eg. French II to French I) of a Late Course

The deadline to drop a class is February 21 using a NEW Slate form

February 21 is the last day to drop a class form your Spring 2023 schedule.  If you drop a class by this date, no record of it will appear on your transcript.  Drop requests can be made using this form, which is new as of this semester.

  • The form will send request for approval to drop from your adviser.
  • You will receive an automated email confirming your adviser has granted you permission
  • You may then log on to Student Planning to drop the class online by the February 21 deadline.
  • NOTE:  You may not drop to fewer than 12 credits, unless you have a CARDS accommodation for a reduced course load.

After this deadline, you have until March 23 to withdraw from a class.  In this case, the class remains on your record, with a grade of W (withdrawal).  This grade means you do not earn the credits for the class, and the class is not factored into your GPA.

Tow Summer Research Fellowship 2023

Tow Summer Research Fellowship

Application Deadline: March 3, 2023

The Tow Summer Research Fellowship supports senior thesis-related summer research projects that require travel, either domestic or international. To apply for funding, you must submit a proposal, budget, and letter of recommendation from a Barnard or Columbia faculty member by Friday, March 3, 2023. Email attachments to blevy@barnard.edu. Below are guidelines for the application:

1. Brief Abstract (75 -100 words): Provide an overview of your thesis topic.

2. Detailed Proposal (maximum three pages, double-spaced, one-inch margins): Provide details about the issues you intend to investigate. You are expected to address the following points:

a. Where do you intend to go?

b. What will you do there and how long do you plan to stay there?

c. Have you made contact with any on-site individuals or institutions whose cooperation will be critical to your research? If yes, provide details.

d. Do you foresee any difficulties (e.g. linguistic, political, medical) and, if so, what precautions do you intend to take?

e. How has your research grown out of your academic pursuits?

f. How is your proposed work necessary to your thesis?

g. Can you conduct your research with partial funding from this fellowship? What is the minimum amount that will allow you to move forward with your research?

3. Letter of Recommendation: The faculty letter of support should be written by a person familiar with your project—the person who will be supervising your thesis, for example—and should address both the importance of the research and your qualifications for carrying it out.

4. Proposed Budget: Provide prioritized details regarding expenses including transportation, daily living costs such as lodging, and other fees or costs associated with your project. Past grants have generally been in the $1000-$4000 range. A chart form is best and should be included as one of the maximum three pages.

If your project involves human subjects, please go to https://barnard.edu/provost/research/regulatory-agencies, click on the link for Student as PI Worksheet, and submit the completed form with your proposal. Proposals will be reviewed and assessed by the Faculty Committee on Honors at our March 2023 meeting. Bear in mind that although some members of the Committee may be experts in your field, most will not be; it will be wise to tailor your proposal accordingly. Grant recipients will be required to provide a report (of up to three pages) describing how the funding contributed to their project or overall academic or intellectual growth. Please direct any questions to Dean Erica Siegel (esiegel@barnard.edu).

A letter of support from an affiliate organization: The affiliate letter should be written by a person who you will work closely with and has an understanding of how you will engage with the organization.

If your project involves human subjects, please go to https://barnard.edu/provost/research/regulatory-agencies, click on the link for Student as PI Worksheet, , and submit the completed form with your proposal. A Message from Lift Up Barnard

Hi Juniors!

Where has the time gone!? It feels like just yesterday that you had graduated high school (probably over Zoom), and now you’re more than halfway through college! We’re sure that you (hopefully) have found your footing at Barnard, but if you’re still looking for another extracurricular and/or some more friends, we here at Lift Up Barnard wanted to remind you that we as a group are here for you!

In case you don’t know who we are, or would like a little refresher, we’re a student-led group dedicated to friendship and community at Barnard. Every week, we switch between having discussions about things like FOMO, stress, friend groups, and more, and having fun activities like origami sessions, movie/game nights, and other things like that. A few times a semester, we also take some off-campus trips to explore NYC together! In the past, we’ve gone to Hex & Co, Levain Bakery, a picnic in Central Park, and the Union Square Holiday Market.

It’s never too late to join our group, as we pride ourselves in being a welcoming space for all Barnard students, no matter what stage you’re at in your college journey. Starting on January 31, we’ll be meeting every Tuesday at 6pm in 327 Milbank. Send us an email at liftupbarnard@gmail.com or shoot us a DM on Instagram at @liftupbarnard to be added to our mailing list or with any questions/comments you may have.

We hope to meet y’all soon, and best of luck with the semester!

Love,

Lift Up Barnard

DEADLINE: Registration, adviser approval & enrollment confirmation by FRIDAY January 27

 Don't forget:

1.  Your Spring 2023 Course Plan in Student Planning must show, in green (i.e. fully registered)all courses that you are taking this semester, including any PE, Dance technique, Varsity sport, Practicum, or rehearsal/performance course for which you will earn credit this semester. Get approval from your adviser if you need to take more than 19 credits.

2.  If your adviser didn't already approve your schedule in November, they must approve your it now, by clicking "Review Complete" in Student Planning.  Ideally, they will do this during an advising meeting with you. If there are extenuating circumstances making it impossible for you and your adviser to meet until next week, your adviser may click Review Complete upon confirming an appointment day/time with you for next week.  Need advice/approval and can't reach your adviser?  Visit us in the Dean of Studies office!

Don't forget to drop any classes or waitlists that you no longer need.

If you are unable to add a course that you know that you're in, or if you are unable to drop a course or leave a waitlist for something you're not taking, please visit or contact the Registrar's office in 105 Milbank, registrar@barnard.edu).

It is possible that a credit for a P.E. course, Dance technique course, or Varsity sport may appear after the registration deadline (if the course is eligible for credit for the P.E. requirement). If this does not happen automatically, you may need to fill out a form.

Friday, 1/27/2023 is the last day you may officially add a course to your schedule. If you need to add a course to your schedule after that date, you will need to petition the Committee on Programs and Academic Standing for permission to do so (contact your class dean if you need info about this), and a late fee may be charged.

You may still drop courses until the Drop Deadline (see Academic Calendar for drop deadlines.
To drop a course after 1/27/2023, you will need to meet with your adviser for approval, so your adviser can submit their approval of your drop request no later than 4:30 p.m. on the drop deadline. Find this and all other deadlines on the Academic Calendar and consider adding the Academic Calendar to your gBear calendar.

**Note about Courseworks/Canvas**
Until the registration deadline, your Courseworks/Canvas page may not look exactly like your Student Planning page because it takes some time for an added class on myBarnard to appear on Courseworks, and it takes some extra time for a dropped class to disappear. Courseworks will catch up eventually. The most important thing is to make sure that your enrollments are accurate on your Student Planning page.

DEADLINE: Uncover a grade of P from Fall 2022 by Friday, January 27

If you elected the p/d/f option for a fall 2022 class, you may now uncover that grade if you like, as long as you do the following by the January 27 deadline:

Go to portal.barnard.edu

Pro Tip: Use Chrome -- this may not work in Safari or Firefox

Click on the Academics tab from the menus across the top

Click on Taking Classes

Click on Change P/D/F Status

This will take you to a page that may ask you to log in again (this is normal -- it is not a phishing attempt!), where you can then go to the same page where you initially elected the p/d/f option, see the grade you would have earned, and decide if you want to leave it p/d/f or "uncover" it so the grade will appear on your transcript and be factored in your GPA.

Note that any uncovered credits will still count toward the total number of p/d/f credits you may elect

Is a hold preventing you from registering? Here's how you can find out where they're coming from so that you can resolve them.

If you logged into Student Planning and got a red pop-up telling you a hold is preventing you from adding/dropping

you should contact the office that has placed the hold to address it ASAP (even if you don't need to register/add/drop right now, this is still a problem that needs to be resolved before it causes you any future issues!).

You can find out where any holds are coming from via the Barnard Portal, which will take you to the relevant Slate page as follows:

1. Log into the portal

2. Hover your mouse over Academics

3. Then hover over Planning Your Courses

4. Then click Registration Appointment & Holds.

5. This will take you to a Slate page which may ask you to log in with your Columbia UNI before opening. Here you will see any holds as well as a link to a list of all upcoming registration times (more comprehensive than what you see in Student Planning, which just shows your next time, and shows nothing if you log in during a reg time):

1-2 Credit Classes Offered in Spring 2023

Doing that degree-audit arithmetic and need one or two more credits?

If you're having trouble getting up to the number of credits you need and are looking for a 1-2-credit course to add, here are some options and tips.

**Be sure to check course descriptions for special registration procedures or necessary permissions.

Know of something that's not on here? Email SeniorClassDean@barnard.edu, and we'll add it!

1-2 credit course options:

1. Fulfill your PE requirement if you haven't yet.
Register online and be sure to attend the first class meeting. PE courses may initially appear in your myBarnard program as 0 credits and will then be transformed to 1 credit (if you are eligible) after the final registration deadline.

Pro Tip:
Unfortunately, there is little to no space in PE for students who want this as an elective. Only students who have not yet completed the PE requirement will be able to preregister for PE. Dance, on the other hand (see below!), often has space

2. Take a dance class
Dance classes may initially appear in your myBarnard program as 0 credits -- if you don't change this when registering, you can fill out the Form to Request a Point of Dance Credit.

3. Depending on your background and interests, here are some popular ways to enrich your academic experience while also adding a credit or two.

Pro tips:

  • Some of these may be full, but you may be able to join a waiting list.
  • Be sure to check course descriptions for prerequisites or special registration procedures!
a. For students who sing, play an instrument, or want to know more about music:

b. For  students with some computer programming experience:
Programming Languages -- COMS-W3101.
Development Technology -- COMS-W3102

Check Computer Science Course Listings for current options. Sometimes these classes are added later than others, so if you don't see them now, you might find them during the fall semester.

c. If you're interested in Physics/Astronomy, Biology, Environmental Science, Psychology

Contact your department to see if you can earn credit for supervised research in a professor's lab

Or:

Science and Scientists (Psychology) - 1 credit

Seminar in Current Research Problems (Physics) - 2 credits

Seminar in Contemporary Physics and Astronomy - 1 credit

Topics in Biology: Crossroads in Bioethics - 2 credits

A Day in the Life of a New York Scientist (EnvSci) - 2 credits

d. Workshops in some Social Science and Humanities fields:

ECON-UN2029 Fed Challenge Workshop

FILM-BC3090 ARTEMIS RISING SHORT COURSE IN FILMMAKING

URBS-UN3990 Crisis Management & Municipal Government

AFEN-BC2022 ReMaking Shakespeare's Sonnets: Race and Intertextu-ality - 2 credits, application needed

f. If you're interested in Theatre, Dance, or Backstage work:
Practicum or Rehearsal & Performance (Theatre or Dance) -- for actors, dancers, stage managers, prop or costume makers, and theatre tech people. Check the course description to see who to contact if you are interested.

g. If you have background in some languages and want to improve your fluency:

Check the course listings for 2-credit Intermediate or Advanced Conversation classes in FrenchItalian, or German,

Or supervised readings in languages -- varies each semester: past options have included Dutch, Sinhala, and Zulu.

h. If you're interested in International Affairs, Political Science, and/or Economics: consider a "short course" at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA)
*search the CU Directory of Classes for "course date" to see when the course starts & ends*
One of the "short courses" offered by the School for International & Public Affairs (SIPA). Search The SIPA Catalogue or the SIPA page of the CU Directory of Classes for 1-1.5-credit courses. You can't just register online for these.  Here is the procedure:

  1. Check to see if the class you want is on the list of SIPA courses approved for Barnard students (forthcoming -- link will be added when available; in the meantime, use your judgment to assess if the class is academic as opposed to professional development)
  2. Contact the instructor to ask if there is space available and if it is appropriate for you given your background. Get any approvals in writing (email is fine).
  3. Contact your academic adviser for approval that the course appropriately fits into both your schedule and a liberal arts curriculum.
  4. Upload both approvals when submitting the online add form.

4. Search Vergil for courses between 0 and 2 credits.
You'll have to scroll through a lot of things that may not help you, like labs for courses you're not taking, courses limited to class years other than yours, but this will give you the most comprehensive listing.

Pro Tip:
Check the detailed course descriptions in the Directory of Classes for prerequisites, restrictions, or special application procedures.
