Do you have thoughts about the Foundations Curriculum? Come share them at a focus group!

Dear Students,

As a Barnard Junior or Senior, you are invited to participate in an assessment study focused on the Foundations Curriculum. The goal of this study is to gather feedback on the curriculum to better understand students’ experience navigating these Foundations requirements, including students’ perspectives on if and how the curriculum shaped their thinking, values, and/or skills. This assessment study is part of a larger effort at the College to review the Foundations Curriculum and recommend changes to the curriculum for the next generation of students. The Foundations Curriculum Review Committee, which includes faculty and staff from across the College, will use the results from these focus groups to inform their review and recommendations. Your feedback is vital for shaping the future of this curriculum.

The study is being conducted as a joint effort of the Provost’s Office, the Office of Institutional Research & Assessment (IR&A), and the Center for Engaged Pedagogy (CEP). The focus groups will be facilitated by Student Learning Assessment Fellows within the CEP, with support from Madeline Miley, Senior Assessment Analyst, within IR&A. The assessment team, led by Laurie Postlewate and Melissa Wright, would be very grateful for your participation.

If you decide to participate, the focus group will meet in person (dates and times listed below) and it will take about 60 minutes to complete.

The focus group will be audio recorded, and a transcript will be used for data analysis purposes. Specifically, the following information will be removed from the transcript:

  • Your name and any other information that would make it possible to identify you

  • The name and any other information that would make it possible to identify any other person or organization that you mention during the focus group

As an incentive for your participation in this assessment study, we will offer you a boxed meal available during or after the focus group, and a fanny pack with a Barnard College logo.  (Your participation in this project is entirely voluntary. If you do decide to participate, you can still stop at any time without any effect on your relationship with the Provost’s Office, Institutional Research & Assessment, or the Center for Engaged Pedagogy or anyone else associated with this project.)

Please indicate your availability to participate (check all available times) by February 16, 2023 via the Google Form linked below. You will receive confirmation via email indicating the date, time, and location of your focus group.
